Ideal gift for Christmas: Tandora – A Pioneer’s Dream
By Lindsay Titmarsh
Book Review by Jane Parker
This book, 5 years in the making was completed in October 2007 and commemorates the Centenary of the arrival of the Titmarsh Family at Tandora, Maryborough on December 16, 1907. The Author, Lindsay Titmarsh, is the current owner of Tandora.
It’s a journey throughout the century, illustrating the Titmarsh legacy and the hardships their descendants endured raising cattle, tackling feral pigs, drought, floods and raising families. The author gives a positive vibe throughout the book, despite its adversities, which is an achievement in itself.
Chapter four gives a detailed account of the woman who began the Titmarsh legacy, Janet Alexander Adams. She emigrated from Scotland to Australia in 1853, married Isaiah Titmarsh and had eleven children. Widowed at 34, her memoirs in the book are of her life, loves and hardships with raising a family on her own and was written four years before her death in 1905 at aged 59.
The pictures are extensive and very educational. They highlight the trials, tribulations and humorous moments of each generation to present day, giving accounts of methods used to overcome the hardships that life on the land can throw at us.
Tandora - A Pioneer’s Dream, is all about life on the land. The agricultural diversity of the book catches the eye and makes it an engaging read. It takes you through what it’s like harvesting sugarcane, Rhodes grass, droving bullocks, hunting foxes and pigs and the art of making honey, to name a few adventures. This hard cover, 389-page book is a recommended read for all ages.

Abstract
As 2000 is the centenary of BSES, it was decided to revise the Manual of Cane Growing as the major activity of that year. This new edition is a complete revision of the previous Manual (published in 1965), and includes sections on subject matter that was unknown in 1965. For example, biotechnology and computers were in their infancy, green-cane trash-blanketing was not practiced, and mechanical harvesting had just commenced. Yield decline and soil compaction were not major issues, and the impact of farming practices on the environment and the long-term sustainability of agriculture were not serious considerations. All these topics are covered in the new edition, as well as up-to-date information on pest, disease and weed management, nutrition, and plant breeding.
