Best Management Practice Evolving Over Time

Technology is constantly evolving and the way we farm now is very different to the way we used to farm 30 years ago.  As new technology and research comes up with better ways of doing things, best management practices change.

Before the Best Management Practice series was released, there was been a number of initiatives leading up to it.  One of the most recent was the Code of Practice for Sustainable Cane Growing in Queensland which was developed by CANEGROWERS in partnership with the sugarcane industry and the Queensland Environmental Protection Agency as a result of an audit of the sugar industry in 1996 which revealed the need for a greater access to information on how to improve productivity, profitability and environment.  The Code of Practice was then worked into a grower friendly self-assessment handbook called COMPASS (Combining Profitability and Sustainability in Sugar), which has become the foundation for the more comprehensive Farm Assessment Program (FPA) run by BSES Limited.
