2010/11 Annual Report Summary: CANEGROWERS Mossman
Mossman Canegrowers Limited negotiated a one year Supply Contract with Mossman Mill for 2010 season. Due to local industry financial issues, the cane payment formula once again contained a constant which reduced the amount paid to growers by $2 per tonne of cane. However, we managed to retain the Mill Planting Incentive for growers at $350 per ha for all cane planted in 2010 for processing in 2011 season.
The 2010 crushing started on 16 June and finished 13 November. Due to a very wet period from September 2010 onwards the mill averaged only 11.65ccs but crushed 539,568 tonnes of cane. The average yield improved slightly to 73 tonnes of cane per ha. The higher expected 2010 sugar and cane prices were dampened by the extended wet weather and the resulting industry sugar shortfall which saw our final sugar price reduced by $44 per tonne IPS. This took $3 per tonne off the mill average cane price.
During the year CANEGROWERS Mossman provided assistance with various industrial and environmental matters, harvesting contract preparations, monitoring and harvester price changes. We also monitored various activities under the Supply Contract through the Industry Management Committee, Advisory Committee and Bargaining Team. We continued involvement in the Local GBRMPA Marine Advisory Committee, Mossman Chamber of Commerce and the Reef Rescue Cane Industry Working Group. We also became involved with the Mossman Sugar Pricing Group with two representatives providing recommendations on Pricing Policy and future pricing targets.
The year saw us assisting Ravensdown Fertiliser Australia with local membership, orders and promotions; highlighting changes in Workplace Relations; continuing work on the Wet Tropics Water Management Plan, State Planning Policy for Great Barrier Reef Wetlands, State Planning Policy for Strategic Cropping Land and ongoing roll-out of the Federal Reef Rescue package (Round 3) and the Queensland Reef Regulations.
