Nominations open for CANEGROWERS elections

CANEGROWERS is kicking off its 2016 triennial election round with a challenge to women and younger growers to put their hands up for local representative positions.

“Over the next three months, grower members will elect directors for each of the 13 district CANEGROWERS companies,” CEO Dan Galligan explained. “These companies are the primary and pivotal gateway to a strong industry body that can accurately and successfully advocate on behalf of all growers.”

From those district directors the CANEGROWERS Policy Council and Board for the next three years will be formed.

“The strength of CANEGROWERS is this proud history of drawing representation and leadership from a democratic and decentralised process – every member can nominate and every member can vote,” Mr Galligan said.

This year CANEGROWERS has set a goal of increasing age and gender diversity among its elected representatives.

“There is, and there should be, a place for all types of voices,” Mr Galligan said. “Inclusivity should be embraced as a way to demonstrate our maturity and capacity to grow as an industry.

“We know we have many skilled and experienced women actively working in cane farming businesses and we need their voices in our organisation.

“Likewise we know there are many enthusiastic and energetic young people in our industry who see a bright future for themselves.

“This election process offers the opportunity to help shape that future – it all starts with putting your name forward.

“Our industry is professionally and robustly lead by strong grower advocates now and we need to ensure that continues into the future. We must see renewal and new leaders being encouraged to step forward and share their ideas.

“If a voice is never heard, an idea never expressed or an opportunity not pursued then we will all suffer from the lack of it,” Mr Galligan said.

Nominations for the triennial CANEGROWERS elections are open until Friday 19 February. Forms are available from each District Office and from the Returning Officer at elections2016@canegrowers.com.au
