Queensland’s sugarcane industry is saddened by the tragic death of a CANEGROWERS member in the Herbert River district.

The grower was badly injured in a controlled burn of cane trash in a paddock that had been harvested at Coolbie near Crystal Creek and he later passed away in the Townsville Hospital.

“Farming communities are close and there will be people shocked and hurting across the sugarcane industry today,” CANEGROWERS Herbert River Chairman Michael Pisano said.

“Our condolences go especially to his family, friends and neighbours and CANEGROWERS will provide whatever support we can.”

The circumstances surrounding how the man became caught up in the flames will be investigated by the appropriate authorities.

“This is a tremendously sad and devastating event, reminding us of some of the inherent risks we face in farming and that the safety and welfare of our people is the highest priority at all times,” Mr Pisano said.
