Taskforce to tackle poor mill performance
Here we are, entering the third week of January 2025, and for some growers the 2024 crush has only just ended. It's a terrible situation for the industry to be in, and, if we're honest, it's a damning indictment on certain sections of our milling sector.
The impact of these late seasons on farming families has been significant, with the financial and emotional strain taking a heavy toll. But, despite the frustration we're all feeling, simply pointing fingers won't solve the problem.
That's why CANEGROWERS has formed a taskforce to tackle these issues and work towards solutions in the months ahead. Growers are demanding actions, and we're hopeful that by working directly with mill representatives we can deliver a collaboration that brings much-needed improvements for future seasons. Read our media release on the cost of delays to the industry here.
MCPA Permit
In September 2024, CANEGROWERS applied for an emergency permit to apply MCPA aerially over sugarcane to manage vine weeds, using data from trials conducted with the help of members Bryce Macdonald from Tully and Richard Hesp from Cairns.
Thanks to their important contribution, this permit was granted over the Christmas break and is active until 31 December 2025.
