CANEGROWERS congratulates the Farmer of the Year award winners

CANEGROWERS is proud to recognise and congratulate two members who are winners in the 2016 Kondinin Group – ABC Rural Australian Farmer of the Year Awards.

“These awards are an excellent way to commend the nation’s farming leaders,” CANEGROWERS CEO Dan Galligan said.

“As an industry we celebrate innovation and resilience. Both Matthew Keith and Dennis Howe have displayed these characteristics in expanding and extending their businesses.

“They, along with all of the category winners, are an inspiration to all farmers.”

Matthew Keith is the 2016 Australian Farmer of the Year, recognised for his commitment to sustainability and diversification.

His family’s Rocky Point mulching and garden products business grew out of their cane farming enterprise and provides an extra revenue stream for the cane growing district between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

At the other end of the state, Dennis Howe from Walkamin on the Tableland has been named the farming Legend of the Year and has won the Award for Excellence in Technology.

With bananas, sugarcane and other crops, he employs 430 people. He’s designed and built equipment for his banana shed and made a computer program to manage the businesses daily operations.
