TRADE Activities in 2023-24
CANEGROWERS' trade policy and market access efforts focus on reducing trade barriers and distortions in the global sugar market.
The organisation works closely with the government, QSL, and the Australian Sugar Milling Council to improve trade terms for Australian sugar, and also lead the Global Sugar Alliance.
Key objectives include ensuring sugar is included in all trade agreements and enforcing trade rules. CANEGROWERS regularly briefs government officials on trade issues, pushing for World Trade Organization reforms, ensuring India's compliance with its international trade commitments, and expanding access to new and existing markets.
CANEGROWERS remains committed to improving global market access, fostering sustainable trade opportunities, and ensuring long-term success for the Australian sugar industry.
The Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (A-UK FTA) marked a major success in 2023, with Australian sugar shipments resuming after 50 years.
By 2031, Australia will have full duty-free, quota-free access to the UK market. CANEGROWERS also supported the deferment of the Australia-EU FTA negotiations due to unfavourable terms for Australian sugar.
In Southeast Asia, CANEGROWERS advocated for better trade provisions and regional collaboration to eliminate barriers.
The organisation submitted recommendations for workforce development and innovation in Australian sugar marketing.
CANEGROWERS also supported Australia’s participation in the ASEAN Sugar Alliance and highlighted the benefits of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) through submissions to the Joint Standing Committee on Trade and Investment Growth.
The ATMAC Sugar Project identified new market opportunities and the importance of validating Australia's sustainable sugar credentials.
