Queensland has the potential to become a bioenergy powerhouse
For well over a century, sugarcane has been one of the most important agricultural industries in our state.
Today, raw sugar is Queensland's second largest agricultural export, with the industry contributing around $4 billion to the economy every year and employing over 20,000 Queenslanders.
But a new dawn is on the horizon for this formative industry, with sugarcane set to play a central role in the burgeoning bioeconomy.
With the right government policies, sugarcane could power the future of low-emissions air travel, generate green electricity for Queensland homes, and produce biofuels, bioplastics and other renewables to be sustainably produced replacements for current fossil fuel-based products.
And we could do all this while supporting Queensland's farming families, creating thousands of new skilled jobs within our regional communities, and helping the nation achieve its ambitious green-house-gas emissions reduction targets.
But we need your help!

Commitments
Sugarcane growers produce over 30 million tonnes of renewable energy every year. For the first time in our history there is a genuine push from the industry and investors to establish a new bioeconomy in Queensland.
Government must support this push in a significant and meaningful way to ensure Queensland doesn’t fall behind international competitors.
Partnerships
Partnerships
There are many opportunities to modernise and transform Queensland’s sugarcane industry, while simultaneously making Queensland a significant player in Australia’s bioeconomy revolution.
To take advantage of these opportunities the industry needs a successful partnership with the State Government.
Water and Electricity
Water and Electricity
Electricity bills paid by farmers have risen 130% since 2006-07, while irrigators have been excluded from recent price reductions for small business and households.
We need to reduce the cost of power and water to drive productivity and profitability.

Protect Farmland
In order for the sugarcane industry to live up to its potential as a central player in Queensland's bioenergy revolution while also delivering our sustainably produced sugar that is in high demand across the world. We must protect our major asset in our prime agricultural land from encroachment by urban development and renewable energy projects.
Farmland must be protected, and growers given the opportunity for sustainable expansion to meet the needs of the bioeconomy and our global sugar markets.
