Australia is expanding its regional collaboration this week, taking a seat at the ASEAN Sugar Alliance meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

While Australia is not officially an ASEAN Partner, the invitation to attend and participate in this ASEAN Sugar Alliance is a demonstration of the years of collaboration between countries in the region and particularly between the Australian and Thai industries who have had a bilateral relationship for nearly 20 years.

The three-day ASEAN Sugar Alliance gathering (25–27 September) brings together senior sugar leaders from across Southeast Asia to tackle trade, market volatility and climate policies.

Representing Australian growers, CANEGROWERS CEO Dan Galligan is sharing the industry’s current situation and discussing issues of common challenge and opportunity particularly in relation to the development of a biofuels and sustainable aviation fuels sector.

“While CANEGROWERS continues to be active in other key global arrangements, such as the revived EU-FTA negotiations and reforms of the World Trade Organization, to see industry growth in Australia, it is wise for us to work with our neighbours and learn with them – as we push for a world where we use sugarcane and sugar bi-products to deliver low carbon liquid fuels and clean green energy,” Mr Galligan said.

“The invitation to be involved in this forum was warmly received by Australia and recognises the benefits of a commitment to long term collaboration,” Mr Galligan said.

“Queensland growers have long been key players on the world stage, and we can see that we have much to contribute to these discussions with our ASEAN neighbours.”
