CANEGROWERS CEO Dan Galligan has described the announcement that MSF Sugar’s Mulgrave Mill will no longer crush Mossman cane as deeply disappointing news for the Mossman district and the wider sugar industry.
“Mossman needed the mill, and Mulgrave needed the cane,” Mr Galligan said. “The State Government had even stepped in to help make it work - contributing to the costs of transport and the construction of new haulage trailers - but unfortunately, an agreement still could not be reached.”
The Mossman-Mulgrave project had represented the final opportunity for Mossman growers to continue supplying cane following the closure of their local mill in 2023, and its cancellation leaves major uncertainty for the district’s agricultural future.
Mr Galligan said CANEGROWERS would continue to work closely with the Queensland Government and Mossman growers to support them through the transition and explore all available options.
“While this is not the outcome any of us wanted, our focus now is on standing with Mossman growers and helping the community chart a new path forward,” Mr Galligan said.
“We’ll continue working with government and local industry to ensure the region’s farming heritage and community strength aren’t lost in the process.”
